Abstract

This introductory essay situates the volume at the point of intersection between the fields of memory, life writing and social movements. It sets out an approach to life writing as a relational and intersubjective form of memory work that connects individual and collective experience. Using this framework and with reference to its seven case studies, it shows the value of life writing in activism, both in advocating for particular causes and in shaping the meaning of contentious action.
