Abstract

Describes the scientific aims of the NARS experiment and summarize the most important characteristics of the array. Briefly reviews the functioning of the array in the first 2 yr of its existence. The response rate (the number of stations with a successfully triggered recording of a large earthquake) has in this time slowly grown to about 70%. The early experiences with NARS have shown that the operation of an autonomous digital array is realizable at low cost. Concludes with a set of recommendations that new digital broad-band networks may turn to good account, and a few preliminary results that give a representative impression of the kind of new data that may be expected from the NARS array in the near future. -from Authors
