Abstract

This climate systems section of Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability is dedicated to REDD+, the policy currently under negotiation at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that is formally known as 'reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries'. The aim of the section is to provide a comprehensive interdisciplinary overview of the state-of-the-art in REDD+ research. As such, it includes reviews from both natural and social scientific perspectives. It also brings together perspectives that are both critical of and optimistic about REDD+, with several authors proposing specific ways forward to ensure the success of REDD+.
