Abstract

This chapter clarifies some of the central concepts concerning sustainable development, and discusses potential trade-offs between sustainable development objectives: economic, social and environmental. The governance dimension of sustainable development is identified, with particular reference to land use, demonstrating the crucial part that this plays when it comes to translating desired objectives into policies and effective implementation.
