Abstract

The World Economic Forum classifies the Dutch infrastructure as excellent. Out of 138 countries, the Global Competitiveness Report 2016–2017 ranks Dutch infrastructure third. That position is a combination of scores on more specific criteria: first on port quality, fifth on overall infrastructure, fourth on roads and air transport, fifth on energy supply, seventh on railroads. Nevertheless, the Netherlands is not devoid of infrastructural challenges, more specifically the daily traffic congestions in Randstad Holland. This chapter presents a review of the development of (inter)national infrastructure, transport and communication networks since the 1900s.
