Abstract

Though unusually short (1522-1523), the pontificate of Adrian Boeyensz., a native of Utrecht, has been widely interpreted as a turning point in the history of the church and of the Renaissance, attracting often highly divergent appreciations, depending on the perspective adopted by the scholars concerned. The 18 chapters in this edited volume together offer a fresh and transdisciplinary view on Adrian VI's papacy and legacy that transcends such conventional perspectives. It offers new insights on the impact this pontificate had beyond the dominant political, ecclesiastical and cultural circles, particularly on the city of Rome and its inhabitants.
