Abstract
Eye movement data and text comprehension data of 181 Dutch ninth grade students were collected to investigate the effect of syntactic dependency length on on-line processing and text comprehension. Students were enrolled in pre-university education, general secondary education or pre-vocational education. Sentence reading times increased when dependency lengths increased. No effect of dependency length on text comprehension was found. Pre-university students read faster and scored higher on comprehension than pre-vocational students but no interaction with dependency length was found.
