Abstract
This study focuses on quantifying the GHG emissions attached to future bioenergy contribution to the EU energy mix up to 2050. Future EU bioenergy demand, the volumes of biofuel interregional trade required to fulfill this demand, and sourcing options are assessed under explorative scenarios. The scenarios are designed to test the effect of both global and regional climate policy pathways. Additional constraints such as the sustainability criteria laid out in the renewables energy directive II and technological availability (BECCS) are further applied to test the implications of these important aspects on mitigation potential.
Results highlight the influence of bioenergy for meeting future mitigation targets at an EU level and the contributory effects of GHG reduction that can be unlocked under proposed climate policy. Likely future feedstock/biofuel sourcing regions are identified for a range of total demand levels. The GHG emissions attached to these trade volumes and regional balances are investigated and reported as to their influence on EU mitigation potential.
