Abstract
This article deals with emotion in stylistic approaches. It begins by giving a chronological overview of the role that emotion has played in stylistics and the related fields of literary criticism and discourse analysis. Starting with formalism, and moving through functionalism into the cognitive domain, it shows that emotion has indeed played a meaningful role in stylistics, especially from the perspective of reception. It goes on to highlight some of the more influential contemporary stylistic studies and concludes by showing how the role of emotion is unavoidably becoming increasingly prominent in this current cognitive age of stylistics.
