Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the educational field, both institutional and cultural, of the Dutch Golden Age, stressing the humanistic and philological outlook (classical, but above all biblical) of its universities and illustrious schools as a selling point that attracted numerous students from abroad. The chapter corrects myopic histories that focus solely on natural scientific developments, and pays special attention to the Dutch Republic as a centre in the international Republic of Letters.
