Abstract

This paper, based on research for the speakers PhD dissertation, delves into the delicate situation of Giorgio Vasari as the court artist of Cosimo I and later Francesco I de'Medici. It points out that for both parties it was not without risk to tie an artist to a court in sixteenth-century Italy.
