Abstract

The objective of this study is to provide an insight into the consequences of household developments for the level and the direction of retail expenditures in post-war neighbourhoods built in the Netherlands between 1945 and 1970. Geographic research into processes of population change in these early post-war neighbourhoods was linked with planning research into changes in the population threshold commanded by retailing facilities. This study combines an analysis of purchasing behaviour with an analysis of the household dynamics in urban neighbourhoods built in the 50s and 60s. The research was based on the time-space approach, which comprises both the activity pattern (daily path), which affects individual purchasing behaviour, and the households' and residential areas' life-cycle, which is of major influence on the individual residential mobility. The empirical part of the research shows that it is exactly this combination of household-specific purchasing behaviour on the one hand and changes in the household structure on the other hand, which can bring about major changes in the retail threshold. -from English summary
