Dutch Changing Capitalism in International Perspective

Abstract

The Dutch changes in capitalism over the 20th century are compared with other countries. First the impact of ideas and developments in Great Britain, Germany and the UK on The Netherlands are analysed. Then Dutch experiences are compared with the four Nordic countries that are also small open economies. The second half of the 20th century shows many similarities between The Netherlands and the Nordic countries. However, the consequence of openness can be quite different for different countries, as some recent experiences in East-Central European countries show. War and economic crises were moments for paradigm changes, and the financial crisis of 2008 may well signify the reversal of the move from coordination towards liberalism.
