Abstract

The Agreement between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Dominican Republic Concerning Maritime Delimitation (2021 Agreement) delimits the maritime zones of the Dominican Republic and the Netherlands territories of Aruba and Curaçao. The boundary, which is located between the opposite coasts of the parties and measures some 42 nautical miles (M), is an all-purpose maritime boundary. The shortest distance between the land territory of the Dominican Republic and the island of Aruba is just over 300 M and the distance from the former to the island of Curaçao is some 340 M. The maritime boundary between the Dominican Republic and the Netherlands aligns with the termini of the maritime boundary between the Netherlands and Venezuela that was established in 1978 and nearly coincides with the termini of the maritime boundary between the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, which was defined by a treaty concluded in 1979.
