title = "Dominican-Iraqi scholarship and the Syro-Chaldean seminary of Mosul: Creating and maintaining a shared space of scholarly activity (1878-1950)",
abstract = "The Syro-Chaldean seminary of the Dominican mission in Mosul was created in 1878 and functioned as a meeting place for knowledge production concerning the Syriac language, literature and traditions. Both local clergy and French missionaries took active part in this scholarly endeavour, the fruits of which are still widely in use by scholars today. However, while there were several important publications from Chaldean authors with the Dominican mission press before the First World War, the period after the war does not show this high degree of integration between French and local scholars. In this contribution, I will show that this rupture is related to a general change in the language policy of the Dominican mission and its seminary, where a subtle move in focus on Arabic and the other local languages to a concentration on French is visible.",
