Doing phenomenology: The empathetic implications of CREW’s head-swap technology in ‘W’ (Double U)

Abstract

This chapter offers a critical analysis of CREW’s ‘W’ (Double U), a performative experiment that uses immersive omnidirectional video to swap the vision of two participants, allowing them to move in each other’s field of vision. The chapter investigates how the performance, as a case of ‘doing phenomenology’, might help us understand the phenomenological meaning of looking at the world from someone else’s perspective. The performance will be analyzed from a technological point of view and from the perspective of the actual behavior of the participants, offering two different readings of how the performance produces a particular kind of empathy.
