Abstract

Providing access to sport facilities is a major priority for policy makers in promoting health and sports participation. Despite the importance of sport facilities, relatively little attention has been paid to date to the characteristics of sport facilities that influence sports participation. Previous studies have emphasized the effect of distance, but neglected personal circumstances and constraints of individuals as additional important determining factors. By understanding what factors cause constraints for individuals with respect to sport participation, policymakers and sport suppliers can intervene directly, in order to stimulate and facilitate (a more inclusive) sport participation.
Therefore, this paper examines, by using the leisure constraints scale, to what extent individual athletes experience constraints regarding accessibility, time, health, lack of partners and lack of knowledge to participate in sports. The paper investigates if and how these constraints are related to differences in spatial factors and individual characteristics and preferences. With regard to spatial factors, the paper focuses on explaining differences in use of sporting spaces and experienced constraints, as a function of physical accessibility and characteristics of sport facilities and level of urbanity. Special attention is paid to investigate differences in gender, household type and health-related characteristics.
Data collection took place by a random survey among adults in different urban and rural municipalities in the Netherlands. First results of quantitative and GIS analysis will be presented. The paper assumes spatial differences in the experience of constraints to participate in sports for athletes in different type of sports and discusses the importance of accessibility relative to individual characteristics and preferences.
