Abstract
This article sketches the reception of Die größere Hoffnung in the Dutch language area from the first reviews in the early fifties up to the present day. The focus is on Frank Schuitemaker’s translation which appeared in 1981 together with an introduction to Aichinger’s life and work. A few examples show that the translator based his choices on a careful interpretation and thorough knowledge of Aichinger’s work. Nevertheless the reception remained modest, despite evidence of increased interest after the second edition appeared in 1987, the year in which Aichinger received the Europalia price.
