Abstract

Development Corridors are defined as the materialisation and institutionalisation of development along certain routes as the consequence of repeated (on a regular basis) mobility of people, goods, capital or information. Local development will therefore depend not only on the initial pattern of interconnectedness, but such relationships will in time show a tendency to blur, to strengthen, or to disappear. The concept of Development Chains is closely related to the idea that local development opportunities and possibilities for people to improve their situation will greatly depend on access to local and non-local networks, through mobility and the conditions under which local actors are being integrated in wider networks.
