Abstract

The tripeptide glutathione (l-γ-glutamyl-l-cysteinylglycine) participates in numerous cellular functions. Glutathione is involved, for example, in the synthesis of proteins, regulation of enzyme activity, amino acid transport, and the catabolism of reactive oxygen species. Glutathione also serves as a coenzyme in the synthesis of endogenous compounds (e.g., leukotrienes) and the detoxification of exogenous compounds.
