Abstract
In volume number two of NTZ in 2017, Gielen responded to critical analysis of the discrepancy model and the concept of overdemanding of the author in 2013. Both concepts are central in Došen’s developmental psychodynamic model. In this essay, the author comments on the arguments put forward by Gielen and adds new arguments against the discrepancy model. The author maintains his original conclusion and advices to stop thinking in terms of discrepancies as if differences between developmental domains are scientifically valid. It is unethical, it produces a false feeling of certainty, because it is based on old and no longer valid knowledge of normal development and on insufficient knowledge of cognitive functioning in people with intellectual disabilities. According to the author, a neuropsychological approach will led to a more broad profile of neurocognitive functioning (including social and emotional functioning) of this group and it offers new ways of treating emotional and behavioural problems as well. It is crucial to apply this approach in the care for people with intellectual disabilities and to examine the effects of these kind of treatments.
