Abstract
During the past 30 years, several pollen database cooperatives have been established. These databases are now constituent databases of the Neotoma Paleoecology Database, a public domain, multiproxy, relational database designed for Quaternary-Pliocene fossil data and modern surface samples. The pollen database cooperatives have set standards for data quality control and for taxonomic nomenclature and synonymy. The Neotoma database is a secure archive for palynological data, and it is essential cyberinfrastructure for paleoenvironmental research. Applications range in scale from local studies to global-scale biome mapping and paleoclimatic reconstructions.
