Abstract

Privateering, or legitimate forms of armed robbery on the seas, and piracy or illegitimate forms, was not always clear-cut in the 17th century Netherlands. Underneath the strict legal distinctions between privateers and pirates there existed a fluid continuum of social, economic and cultural practices.
