Abstract

This chapter discusses how the ability to use (human) natural language has changed the way people interact with software systems. Navigating from Turing's Imitation Game to modern intelligent assistants, this chapter provides an overview of conversational agents in both technical and social dimensions of human-computer interaction (HCI). It also explores the techniques and methodologies to develop and evaluate conversational agents under the lens of HCI and discusses the implications and future of these agents in human society.
