Abstract

Context matters for leadership. Contextual analysis in leadership studies tries to find out when and how contexts shape leadership possibilities, and reversely when and how leaders are able to mould (others’ understandings of) the contexts in which they operate. This article reviews the multidisciplinary body of scholarship devoted to these questions. It signals some key analytical and methodological issues facing studies of this kind. It concludes by suggesting priority areas for future research on the nexus between context and political leadership.
