Complex confining layers: a stochastic analysis of hydraulic properties at various scales

Research output: Contribution to journalArticleAcademicpeer-review

Abstract

This thesis presents a study of the problem of characterizing the hydraulic properties, i.e. hydraulic conductivity and effective porosity, and groundwater flow of complex confining layers at various scales. Attention is focused on: how different scales are related to each other and to the observed heterogeneities in the subsoil; The development and application of methods for upscaling measurements of hydraulic prorperties to representative hydraulic properties at the scale of numerical model blocks and to the scales of interest for planning and groundwater modelling; and the development and use of methods for merging "soft' geological information with "hard' measurements for the identification of hydraulic properties at various scales. -from Author
