Abstract

Each year about 30,000 persons in the Netherlands experience a stroke. Several risk factors for strokes have been established. Whether high cholesterol is a risk factor for stroke remains uncertain. We performed a literature search to establish the association between cholesterol and strokes. Different types of stroke have different associations with cholesterol levels. A high serum cholesterol level increases the risk of cerebral infarction, while a low serum cholesterol level increases the risk of haemorrhagic stroke. Statins may diminish the risk of strokes, but this relation can only be assessed when results from ongoing trials are known.
