Abstract
This paper examines how Chinese digital platforms expand their predatory lending models globally. Drawing on ethnographic research in training programs for risk analysts, I introduce the concept of “China time machines” to describe the temporal–spatial configurations that allow Chinese “cash-loan” apps to be transplanted into other markets such as Indonesia. These fintech professionals describe this process as “time traveling,” imagining Southeast Asia as resembling Chinese contexts from a decade earlier. I argue that these ventures generate a form of “chronotopic agency”: the felt capacity to navigate and align sociotechnical chronotopes of markets, algorithms, debt cycles, and regulations. This sense of agency provides professionals with temporary certainty in volatile environments while also disrupting the local social rhythms of borrowers. By tracing how fintech professionals simulate markets, reproduce debt traps, and recalibrate algorithms across borders, the article demonstrates how capitalist time is objectified not through technical abstractions alone but through its symbolic mediation across multiple contexts and layers. “China” itself is mobilized as a chronotope of development, serving both as a memory of accelerated digital growth and a benchmark for future replication. The article illuminates how Chinese digital platforms shape inter-Asian and global technocapitalism, where geopolitical ambitions, financial infrastructures, and temporal–spatial subjectivities intersect.
