Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterProfessional

Abstract

In this chapter, the point will be made that the introduction of the notion of a Human Community with a Shared Future to the field of human rights is a timely step which may rejuvenate a faltering system. The international human rights system is going through a difficult period. The concept will save the system by reforming it. The core of the concept is that in a globalized world, the political, economic and social systems of states are integrated to such an extent, that the interests of these states have become intertwined. This calls for interdependence, solidarity and harmony. Introduction of the concept to the field of human rights will have five consequences: the relationship between states within the international human rights system will become a partnership based on respect and equality; the culture within the international human rights system will become one of encouragement and assistance; there will be a fair representation of different views; the concept of Human Community with a Shared Future will be rolled out primarily with the help of partners in the Global South; social institutions and culture will play a more important role within the human rights system.
