Abstract
In a recent issue of Nature, Zhu et al. demonstrated how the soil environment affects rice root cellular morphology using single-cell transcriptomics. They show that abscisic acid signaling induces the cell wall modifications in response to soil compaction. These modifications act as barriers to water loss and reinforce the cell walls, preparing the root for growth in compacted soil.
