Abstract
This article focuses on one of the research areas of the project “Developing Teaching Competencies for
Extensive Reading Programs” (LEELU, 2016–2019), an international in-service training programme for
teachers on the subject of extensive or free voluntary reading. Teachers in Italy, the Netherlands and Hungary
have put the principles of free reading into practice and developed them cooperatively. The impact of
the programme on the use of reading strategies, the expansion of students’ autonomous learning and the
effects on their reading motivation show how they benefited from the programme.
