Abstract

The goal of this paper is to account for the syntax and semantics of the prefix 'maha-' in Malagasy. Previous analyses of 'maha-' have treated it as involving a lexical aspectual operation: it creates a telic predicate. We argue here that maha- is best analyzed as a causative circumstantial modal.
