Applying Haspelmath's Argument Indexing to Old Irish and Middle Welsh pronominal marking

Abstract

This paper reviews the recent proposal by Haspelmath (2013) for classifying bound person forms, more usually called affixes and clitics. He argues against separating the two types. Rather, he combines them as INDEXES and defines three subclasses depending on the ability of the bound forms to accept a coreferential noun phrase in the same clause. Haspelmath's proposal is then applied to the bound person forms of Old Irish and Middle Welsh, in order to see if it can improve our understanding of these complex systems.
