Alexander de Grote, dankzij Philippus: Recensie van: Adrian Goldsworthy, Philip and Alexander: Kings and Conquerors

Research output: Other contributionProfessional

Abstract

Adrian Goldsworthy has written an epic double-biography of Philip of Macedon and his son Alexander the Great. The work not only sketches the rise of the kingdom of Macedon, but also the gradual downfall of classical Athens. Alexander's subsequent March into the Eastern Empire of the Persians and his ascension to the Persian throne is described with use of recent research, that also takes into account an oriental perspective. The Dutch translation, however, leaves a lot to be desired, as for example the complete negligence of Alexander's famous Companions, that are reduced to simple troops or soldiers, to mention just one out of many historical inadequacies. The English version, magnificent as it is, is therefore strongly recommended.
