Abstract

This chapter draws upon interdisciplinary studies of migration in later life and a relational approach to place to discuss the concept of ageing in place. We examine ageing in place through a transnational lens that is attentive to the multiple place attachments of individuals who either experienced migration themselves or are implicated in others’ migration projects. We show that the experience of ageing in place comprises connections and affiliations with multiple places and communities that individuals have established over the lifecourse. We argue that research agendas and policy work will need to move beyond static views of place and we stress three complimentary debates on age-friendly cities, ageing as embodied and the meaning of home in older age as useful starting points to embark on these efforts.
