Abstract

Discussion of the 40+-year career of Frits Portielje, director of live stock at Artis. A prolific lantern lecturer between the mid-1910s and mid-1950s, his observational qualities and his entertaining lectures were influential on both a generation of naturalists and ethologists as well as the general public in the Netherlands. His ideas were also communicated in books (notably the immensely popular Verkade series), radio, radio, guided tours as well as through his teaching at the first Amsterdam Montesorri school.
