Abstract
Popular song of the late-medieval period presents us with a surprising number of texts in which enterprising young women leave home and, once outside of it, voluntarily or involuntarily meet a man. This is not the case for young men, who are not pictured leaving home as often; even when they do, they do not invariably encounter a woman, nor is that encounter similar. The gender difference in this specific form of mobility calls for a closer examination
