Introductory essay to the work of self-made physical anthropologist Paul Julien (1901-2001), more specifically his slide - and film-illustrated lectures based on his regular expeditions to equatorial Africa between the early 1930s and mid-1960. Thre essay is part of the book piblished on the occasion on the exhibition of Julien's werk, 'I wish there was color, I wish there was sound', curated by Andrea Stultiens at the Nederlands Fotomuseum, Rotterdam
