Abstract
Twente, located in the eastern part of the Netherlands, is a region that has been intensively studied in the past in relation to archaeology, landscape and palynology. The available wealth of data from these different scientific fields makes this area an unique testing ground for a newly developed method of vegetation reconstruction on a larger scale. By means of an integral inventory and analysis of all available palynological data in combination with detailed geographical and historical maps the Holocene vegetation development in Twente was reconstructed. First an overview of the regional vegetation development was made based on high-resolution palynological data. Secondly, using all available palynological records, the local landscape around investigated sites was dressed with vegetation based on present-day plant communities and their ecological characteristics. These vegetation patterns were then extrapolated to a regional scale. This resulted in six vegetation maps for different time-slices in the Holocene.Based on these maps five artist impressions of the landscape and vegetation were made. These snapshots offer a unique science-based overview of the changing landscape and demonstrate how and to what extent humans altered the landscape through time.
