About

Bio
I am Christa van IJzendoorn, an Assistant Professor in Nature-Based Solutions for Dynamic Delta Challenges at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. I obtained my BSc and MSc in Earth Sciences at Utrecht University and worked as a junior advisor/researcher Flood Risk Management at Deltares. I carried out my PhD in Coastal Engineering at Delft University of Technology, where I investigated decadal dune development along the Dutch coast, and the effect of grain size on wind-driven (aeolian) sediment transport. As a postdoc at Oregon State University (USA), I simulated decadal coastal dune development and aeolian sediment transport on dynamic cobble revetments, and I collected measurements of the subsurface composition of composite cobble beaches.

Research
Climate change and sea level rise increasingly impact people living in deltas. I aim to reduce these impacts by informing delta adaptation in the Netherlands and beyond. I specifically focus on increasing climate resilience by enhancing the implementation of nature-based solutions. My expertise lies in quantifying aeolian sediment transport to predict the development of coastal dunes and coastal nature-based solutions. I combine field measurements and modeling to develop tools that can aid in the design and implementation of nature-based solutions. As part of this effort, I developed the Jarkus Analysis Toolbox and am one of the lead developers of the open source numerical model AeoLiS
