Can people outside of Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region make Parmesan cheese? Or, as we should call it officially, Parmigiano Reggiano. If you ask Italy and the European Commission, they’d argue they can’t. Hence the system of geographical indications that tie a certain product to a region.
