Description
Cheap penny prints were ubiquitous in many European countries in the 18th and 19th centuries. They can be seen as the forerunners of the modern comic strip. These massively produced penny prints have been studied from various angles, but the interplay between the visual dimensions and modernist (post-impressionist) painting has not been systematically explored. Let alone from a transnational perspective. This is despite the fact that famous painters such as Courbet, Gauguin, Chagall, Bernard and van Gogh were strongly inspired by this 'folkloristic' tradition. This paper presents some initial findings from this fascinating area of research.
