Currently, contradicting results exist about the influence of inhibition on creativity . Some studies report a beneficial effect of inhibition on reativity, because standard techniques and rules can be inhibited, but also by increasing the ability to focus and persist on a task. On the other hand, less inhibition can lead to the perception of more stimuli that can be manipulated in working memory to form a more creative product. In order to explain these results a distinction should be made between early inhibition (i.e. latent inhibition) and late inhibition (i.e. response inhibition). In the current study the relationship between late inhibition and creative giftedness was investigated with a sample of 12 creatively gifted children (based on a score of 85% or higher on the TCTDP) and 77 non-gifted children. Inhibition was investigated with a flanker task. Results showed that creatively gifted children responded significantly slower during incongruent trials (F (1,89) = 4,828, p = .031) but not during congruent trials (F (1,89) = .139, p = .711) compared to creatively non-gifted children. These results support the notion that highly creative children show reduced late inhibition and will be extended in the future with EEG and eye-tracking results to investigate early inhibition as well.| Period | 3 Jul 2017 → 5 Jul 2017 |
