Description
Abstract: The so-called “Mayerne Manuscript,” today in the Sloane collection at the British Library (MS 2052) was compiled in the seventeenth century by and for Theodore de Mayerne, one of the most influential physicians of his time and a prolific writer. Mayerne's multilingual collection of artisanal recipes--a unique source for Netherlandish color-making and painting techniques--has seen several editions and translations that serve nowadays as a much-used “handbook” for the study of Baroque art technologies. This paper examines colored ink recipes in MS 2052 that testify to Mayerne's practice of close observation and his use of the manuscript page as a site for manual experimentation with natural colorants. Using both recipe reconstruction research and close reading methods, it shows how the translation of this folio into modern print editions has framed our understanding of Mayerne's manual for the study of art and writing technologies.Period | 23 Feb 2018 |
