The Daphne Festival in 166 BCE from three perspectives

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talkAcademic

Description

This short lecture summarizes my earlier reflections on the festival orchestrated by Antiochus IV Epiphanes in 166 BCE at Daphne (Syria). The presentation is structured around three key perspectives: (1) the festival's religious aspects (I am convinved that it was a new year festival); (2) the festival's role in fostering Seleucid imperial cohesion; and (3) the ideological messages conveyed by the procession and its imagery.
