The art of making wise and timely decisions in supervision

Activity: Talk or presentationPoster/paper presentationAcademic

Description

Purpose - Supervisors are in the unique position to monitor the adequate functioning of institutions or entire markets and are meant to identify and mitigate risks that can harm customers, clients or society as a whole. In order to make wise and timely decisions (e.g. whether or not to intervene), supervisors are supposed to act both deliberately (i.e. decisions are made carefully and systematically) as well as decisively (i.e. decisions are made quickly and effective). The aim of the present study is to investigate the extent to which deliberation and decisiveness are embedded in supervisors’ organisational or team climate, since both are expected to uniquely contribute to decision quality and performance.

Design/Methodology/Approach – An online questionnaire was conducted among both internal supervisors as well as external supervisors from various supervisory bodies via their umbrella associations (N = 245).

Findings – Mediation analyses conducted via structural equation modelling showed that deliberation and decisiveness are both positively linked to perceived decision quality and in turn to perceived supervisors’ organisational or team performance. The predictive value of deliberation was higher than of decisiveness. These results are highly similar for internal and external supervisors (i.e. our model proved to be the same for both professional roles).

Practical implications – Our findings indicate that both internal as well as external supervisors can gain in their decision-making from paying more attention to deliberation and decisiveness as part of their organisational or team climate.

Originality/Value – Our findings indicate that—in the context of supervision—deliberation and decisiveness uniquely contribute to decision quality and supervisors’ organisational or team performance, whereas previous research has mainly focused on and argued for only one of these two decision-making strategies.
