‘Stock Exchange Legitimacy: the case of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, 1887-1945

Activity: ExaminationMember of an PhD examination committeeAcademic

Description

The central problem in his research is: ‘How did the Johannes Stock Exchange gain and maintain legitimacy after its establishment?’ . This is a relevant problem as stock exchanges all over the world nowadays have a pivotal role in market capitalism. While they are in fact private enterprises run by the tradesmen themselves, stock exchanges are generally considered to be neutral agents on the stock market where billions of dollars are traded on a daily base. But their legitimacy was not always taken for granted as Strydom shows in his study on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
