Description
As part of Rotterdam Architecture Month, I am organizing a tour of four buildings by the modernist architect, J.J.P. Oud (1890 - 1963) in close cooperation of partners in Rotterdam: photographer Frank Hanswijk, writer Paul Groenendijk, art historian Bjorn de Leeuw, Huis van de Toekomst-Botu, and Studio C.A.R.E. The tour is in Dutch and open to twenty participants.
During this activity, participants will learn about four buildings that Oud designed for Rotterdam: the "Spaarbank" (1957), the “Utrecht” (1961), “Café de Unie” (1925), and the apartment building “Bospolder-Tussendijken” (1924). Architectural and community guides will elaborate on each building’s beginnings and explain how the building has changed, culminating in the building’s current significance for the city. Participants will be invited to take field notes during the tour, mapping the location and appearance of the building as they experience it.
The tour will guide participants to each location and end with a visit to a photo exhibition of the last building, Bospolder-Tussendijken, where the photographer will be present, and a closing conversation in a community center located in the building about field notes made by the participants.
