Reimagining religious belonging: rhizomatic belonging as a tool to think together multiplicity and ultimate concern

Description

In his research of the past five years, Daan has focused on the question how to understand religious belonging in the light of the emergence of hybrid religiosities. Many scholars argued that “multiple religious belonging” is no religious belonging at all. In critically engaging with hermeneutical models of religious diversity in Chinese culture, and borrowing from the tradition of French critical theory, he proposes “rhizomatic belonging” as a tool to think together on the one hand the multiple religious traditions and elements people are exposed to in an increasingly interconnected world, and on the other hand the longing for belonging and the sense that this religious hybridity on the individual level somehow makes sense.
