On Connection: Queer Festival Curation, Practice and ExperimentationForced into our limited, sometimes even solitary, bubbles during the pandemic, who did not miss stepping out to the cinemas? The charm of the big screen was not easily replicable with online streaming platforms. For film festival audiences, organizers, and filmmakers alike, this meant a loss of connection. The urgency with which film festivals are moving back to their old, physical screenings is testament to the need for re-establishing the human connection.
On Connection is our attempt to re-instate the bondingconnection we lost during the pandemic – both with ourselves and our communities. It brings together film festival scholars in an interface with festival organizers and film practioners to create a space where they discuss the past, present and the future of queer festival practices. It provides a creative opportunity to re-evaluate and experiment with ideas in the field of film festival organization and curation. And it brings festival modes of engagement to bear on the conference format. As such, the two-day conference is conceived around three equally important articulations of connection: networking, communal viewing and embodied participation.
